![]() I’m really excited to hopefully show with this character that Asian men can be cool, and you can follow us into battle and trust us, and also be a little bit attracted to us, too. He’s a really incredible, all-American guy, which is not something we’re used to seeing by an Asian American actor. He’s a family man: he’s married, and not a womanizer or single. ![]() My character, Matthew Simmons, is kind of the field guy, the “muscle” guy. I feel a lot of responsibility with this role. My character on Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders is very different from what we’ve seen in the past. Indeed, in his 2016 interview with me, Henney discusses how media stereotypes of Asian American men influenced his decision to take the role of Simmons on Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders. Henney’s Special Agent Matthew Simmons was a breakout fan favorite of Criminal Minds: Beyond Border. Introduced as an old colleague of Criminal Minds’ Derek Morgan (Shemar Moore), Simmons was a radical departure from the stereotypical portrayal of Asian American men in media. The show's legacy is hard to ignore, but the spin-offs weren't as well received as the flagship show ever was ( Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior was canceled after one season and Beyond Borders was canceled after two seasons). Daniel Henney's return to Criminal Minds is likely dependent on his filming schedule or his contract with Amazon, but it is also possible that he simply wants to branch out from the Criminal Minds universe.Ĭriminal Minds' original run on TV consisted of a total of 324 episodes across 15 seasons and produced numerous spin-offs, including Criminal Minds: Suspect Behavior and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders. Henney is now involved in Amazon's fantasy adaptation The Wheel of Time, which is currently in the process of filming season 2.
